[The Storm]
August 2003
Screams could be heard coming from the large house, just miles off the shore. Sure, there was a sea wall lining the shore, but not even that could stop what was coming. The devil of the seas. A hurricane. Horses whinnied nervously as the sensed the change in the air, and they blew nervously, pacing in their stalls. Inside the house, thirteen year old Kira had no idea what to do. She'd been born in this town, and she'd grown up with the horses, but suddenly she felt unfamilar to everything around her. 'Kira, you've got to come help us! Sonya won't follow anyone but you!' The stablehand called from the barn. The storm was coming in a matter of hours, and they'd finally decided to put the horses in the safest place they could think of. The indoor arena, built of bricks and concrete with a strong foundation.
Kira flung herself out of the house, the heavy oak door flapping as if paper in the wind, threatening to break loose of it's hinges. She ran toward the barn, trying her hardest to not let the wind sway her. 'Sonya, come here, baby...' She murmered, taking the mare's shank nervously and leading her down the path that led to the indoor arena. The chestnut Thoroughbred held her head high, nostrils wide, searching for the danger she knew she'd find. But Kira kept her head down, petting her nervously all the while before tying her to the railing near the bleachers once inside the arena. There were about six other horses tied up already, but there were so many more to go...
Two hours later, they'd saved all the horses they could save. Kira sat in storm shed with her family, not knowing if the horses were okay, only able to pray that they were... Wondering if the storm had come yet, or if there was debris and disaster flying over their heads at this exact moment. But she knew when it finally came... There was no way she could mistake it. Because in an instant, the storm came. Winds slammed the property like a defensive lineman, and the crashes mixed with the screams of horses. Kira's horses.
[Renassiance]
May 2005
A smile came over Kira's face as she leaned low over Sonya's neck, the chestnut mane stinging her face as they galloped down the trail. A light came at the end of the wooded pathway and the trees flew by in a blur, becoming clear as she slowed her mare to a canter, a trot, and a walk as she appeared at the front of the property. Reconstruction. A rebirth of what life had once been for her. Her mom was over seas now, but her dad was here, even if she didn't spend much time with him. And since her mother had won the silver medal in show jumping, they finally had enough money to rebuild the barn after the horrible storm, and get some new stock. Sonya was the only horse that had survived. But now they finally had a chance to be more than what they were now. A champion stable. An equal competitor to Stonehall. A family.
[The Years Go By]
Today
Kira is still there with her mother, although her father died last year, and Surfside Equine continues to be a strong force in the equestrian world. She herself is now working on showing at national level at age eighteen. But enough about Kira's story. You have to write yours. But don't grab a piece of paper or pen. Some stories are better kept off the paper.
