Cody meekly smiled back "Nice to meet you too" he responded. He still had a sad, black hole where his heart used to be, but it wasn't noticed easily. Only the people who were really close to Cody had been able to tell. Since their departure, much growth had widened that black hole. He feared someday it might take over himself, more than before. Just one more slip and he'd be destined to sadness. Sometimes that's how he felt.
Cody smiled, glad he wasn't the only person that liked to come here alone at midnight. Except this girl had a horse. He used to, but those golden days passed too quickly and it was all just a memory now. He noticed she felt stupid for admitting that she liked to be at the beach at midnight for a tradition. He didn't mind, it was sort of a tradition for himself. Except it hadn't always been the beach. Sometimes it would be his old horse's stall, or, a new empty stall since he moved. The warm fresh scent of horses and hay seemed to calm him. It always just made him cry more. His past was so wonderful, why did he deserve to have it all taken away? Nobody knew.......not himself. No human knew his past except the ones he once loved. Nobody would ever know any more than that.
"I like to come out here too.....to think" he whispered. The words he spoke and the way he spoke it seemed to be a gentle way of saying that that was all the information leaving his lips about the subject. The silver moon arose behind once white clouds and then became buried again in a mist of condensation. He waded in the still salty ocean water and breathed in the crisp scent of Fall. The leaves that were now a pitched grey in the moonlight, lined in black, were orange and yellow and red and brown in the daytime.
When she asked if he lived around here, he nodded softly. Unspoken. Until he finally twitched open his mouth and words, almost inaudable, came out. "Yes, I live at Horse Heaven Stables. In the houses of course" he forced a smile. "What about you?" he waded back to shore and pulled himself onto the moist sand. When Blitz, her horse, nudged him and gave a soft whicker, a tear fell down his heartbroken face. He wiped it away quickly, before anyone noticed, and smiled gently at the horse. He reached out a shaking hand to rub his muzzle.
When she announced she was leaving, before he could think, he reached out a hand to touch her arm. "No! Wait, please." he found himself saying. Unfortunately, he said it so softly it was unaudible. She went ahead and tacked up then mounted and a tear slithered down Cody's face. He sighed sadly and buried his head in his arms, curling around his knees. He finally met someone in this new place and they already hated him and wanted to leave. He'd never be perfect. Nobody understood him. He was missunderstood and underestimated. Did Saz see past his phony glistening eyes, hiding the sadness inside? He felt tears come and lifted a hand and waved, without lifting his head. His head felt heavy and his eyes felt like they were held down by weights. He tried to call to her to stop, but he couldn't speak.
Later he found himself sprawled out close to the water and awoke, gagging on salt water, he spit it out and yawned, stretched, and rubbed his eyes. When he opened them he looked around. He had to blink several times and pinch himself, he didn't believe it. He was alone in a strange place different from where he had drifted off. He stood up and called to anyone or anything near. He was met with no reply. He began to cry. He was alone in the world, he was in a strange place, and he heard something behind him growl. He turned and stared into the eyes of a demon. The demon raised a claw and it hovered above Cody. The red eyes held darkness unveiled. He neared his doom.
